My Goal: To Watch Every Warriors Game This Season. So that I don’t try to hedge on that, here’s what I mean.
The Rules:
This season means the regular season. Of course I’m going to watch the post-season–that goes without saying. And I’m watching the preseason cause I’ve been waiting all summer to see another game. But the commitment is for the regular season.
Watch the game means watch all of the game–till the clock runs out. If it’s a blowout, I watch everything.
Watch the game means watch the game, not have the game on while doing other things. I have learned that being on the phone or my computer during a game means I stop paying attention and a quarter goes by and I have no idea what happened. Other people might be able to multitask, but I am a monotask kinda gal. Unless of course, people are calling to talk to me about the Warriors game. That is ok.
Not a rule, but an important guideline. Watch the games as close to live as possible. This is based on experience. I *can* watch a game days later but I don’t enjoy it as much. It’s impossible not to know the result, and watching a game where I know who wins is not that much fun.
These rules aren’t to be dogmatic or make things challenging–again, this is all a theory I’m testing out. If I think watching Warriors games is good for me and fun, why would I want to have less fun by only partly watching them? I wouldn’t.
Since the season hasn’t started yet, you can get in on the action as well. You could watch every game–of the Warriors or of any other NBA team or college team. I think there is a difference between watching most and watching all. I don’t know what the difference is, but I think there’s a difference. So if you want to join in this with me, please do! Bonus: you will have already made your New Year’s Resolution for the year so you don’t have to worry about that in December.
If you are trying this out, here are my suggestions:
Be Determined, but Not Rigid. All the rules are made up. Make up rules that work for you. If you find yourself dreading having to watch a game, that sounds horrible–by all means stop! But if it’s milder, like “today I’d rather watch Abbott Elementary” or “tonight I’d rather go to sleep early” - try pushing through that and watch the game instead. A little discomfort gets interesting, a lot of discomfort is unnecessary.
Be Realistic about Time Zones: It’s far easier to do this on the West Coast than other time zones because games are never late at night. You might have to adjust the idea of watching games live based on your time zone. Cause sleep is really important. Like really important. I want all of you to get enough sleep. And I know, in the previous bullet point I told you to watch basketball instead of going to sleep early. I want both for you.
Be Realistic about You and Your Life. I have a lot of flexibility with my time and I only have to compromise with myself. Most people are not in that situation. They have children, partners, elders, roommates and pets to share space with. I would imagine if you are going to watch every Warriors game, you might need to have a conversation with the people under your roof to see how that impacts everyone.
But what do I know? You know you really well. Figure out what works for you and let’s watch together. Or at least, in my favorite version of together where we are in our own homes but we are doing the same thing.
Were you expecting something about Jordan Poole and Draymond Green? I’ve got nothing. There are any number of reporters following every tiny detail of that, and I don’t have anything to add to that conversation. It does seem to be a challenging way to start a season. In the meantime, Jordan Poole is at practice, at games, getting all his reps in. I’ll follow his lead and focus on the basketball.
But I will share this pic from the Warriors recent stint in Japan, taken on their off day, when Poole and Wiggins went to a hedgehog cafe. I would def watch the buddy movie about these two.
